Having now reached the midpoint of the annual summer Three Counties Racketball inter club league we are beginning to get an idea of who the top teams are likely to be. As always, the top two play off for the title at Aylesbury with the teams playing 4 singles and 2 doubles matches to decide who has bragging rights until next year.
With the Three Counties League now in its 8th year of running, Aylesbury have contested every final playoff held since the current format was introduced in 2012, having won the inaugural contest in 2011 when the competition was played as a conventional league with a 5 man team. Having won every time except once, in 2016 when a hotly contested match resulted in Aylesbury taking the runners up spot behind Thame Racquets, the record speaks for itself.
However this year things are looking tougher for Aylesbury after the disbanding of the all conquering 1st Team, with the champion players fragmenting to other teams (Phipps – 4th team), clubs (Herron – Thame, Krystman – Chesham Bois), and gardening leave (Hales). The league now sees big gaps between the top and bottom of the order with clear daylight between table topping Thame Racquets (107 points) and Phipps’ new charges, the proud 4ths, currently in second place with 63 points.
Still a way to go though and anything could happen between now and finals day…
